Yeltz Lockdown XI

Halesowen Town FC has had no end of exceptional talent in its nearly 150-year history. Many a professional footballer has been cultivated at the Grove while many more have made names for themselves among the Yeltz faithful.

But which players constitute the greatest of all time is, and always will be, a hotly contested debate. So, we want you, the fans, to decide: what is the greatest Halesowen XI of all time?

Every other day, fans will be asked to vote on Twitter for their favourite players. Draws will be made to decide which players will match-up against each other.

The draw for the goalkeeper bracket has already been made and can be seen below. The others draws will be released on Twitter later on today.

The player with the highest number of votes from each round will progress to the next until all the positions of Lockdown XI squad are filled. The full method is described below.

Information on each of the players will be available on Twitter the day before the voting for each round opens.

The first round of voting (the quarter finals for the positions of Goalkeeper, Full Back, and Centre Back) opens at 7pm on Monday 18th January. Turn on tweet notifications to be kept up to date on the latest rounds, and may the best Yeltzmen win!

The Full Method:

  • The Lockdown XI will be in a 4-4-2 formation: goalkeeper, two full backs, two centre backs, two centre midfielders, two wingers, and two strikers. This means that some players (especially pre-1980s) will not necessarily end up in their ‘natural’ position.

  • For each of the positions listed above, 8-12 players have been shortlisted from which fans can choose.

  • Each shortlisted player was given a number and a draw made to place players into brackets based on their position.

  • Players were separated into six groups based on their field position and then each assigned a number. The draw was made within each of these brackets.

  • For brackets with more than 8 players (where byes were needed), a draw was made to decide which players would receive byes before the beginning of the main draw.

  • A random number generator was used to decide the draws.

  • Fans will vote (via Twitter) on each match-up until only two players per position (one for goalkeeper) are remaining. The players remaining at the end of the bracket will go into the Lockdown XI.
